20 Things You Didn’t Know About Rats

1 The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as the Norway rat, and its more acrobatic Asian cousin, the black rat (Rattus rattus), enjoy a nearly worldwide distribution, thanks to their skill at stowing away on ships.

2 In the mid-19th century, Jack Black, the rat catcher for Queen Victoria, found several color variations of the brown rat and domesticated those he caught. Eager owners of his pet rats included the Queen herself, and it’s rumored—disturbingly—Beatrix Potter.


Most Rat Problems in the UK

it is arguably the accolade no town or city wants but Bridgend has been named as the rat capital of the UK.

According to figures from 2015-16, Bridgend council dealt with more rat problems per head than any other authority in Britain last year.

The figures show pest controllers at the authority, which provides a free service, responded to almost 3,000 issues at a rate of more than 20 per 1,000 residents – the highest in the UK.


Pest control problems revealed

THE areas with the biggest pest problems across the borough have been revealed. Local Democracy Reporter JOSEPH TIMAN speaks to Bolton’s rat catchers to find out why the problems persists.

Postcodes in Bolton town centre, Farnworth and Great Lever all feature in the top ten visited by pest control in 2019.
Crompton Way, Hall Lane and Alberta Street had more than 100 rats-related visits between them while Crescent Road was the most visited for mice.
